siesta and tapas
America, we need siestas. Reasons listed below -
the heat can be “unbearable in the early afternoon”, and ultraviolet radiation is at its peak and out to get us.
and so, to be safe, we should run under our covers at home, bringing with us large amounts of snacks.
and then we can commune with our picnic naps with friends and family.
also, we have a biological need for naps, and I am never one to go against the needs of the body.
And, as for tapas, there’s just a cool legend behind it that interests me:
It might have began when Alfonso X of Castile miraculously recovered after drinking wine and small dishes between his larger meals. He then declared that taverns could not serve wine unless a small snack, or tapas, was also served. The original tapas might have been slices of bread and meat. In Andalusian taverns, the meat (usually ham or chorizo) or bread would be slapped on top of the glass so that fruit flies would not hover over the sherry.
Since then, tapas has become much more than a slab of meat on a glass. Though, I have had some interesting tapas-concoctions that I would have traded for that, instead.
